Which leather best suits you and how do you look after it properly?

Our goatskin leather Gusti backpacks are made of smooth leather. These backpacks are a little stiff at first, but they quickly soften over time with use and proper care. We recommend using beeswax-based care products on your goatskin leather bags as the beeswax lies on the leather’s surface like a protective film and you can enjoy them for years to come. The structure of the surface of goatskin leather is protected against dust and moisture, while the moisturizing beeswax helps maintain the leather.

Gusti Leather backpacks made from cowhide or buffalo leather are more robust due to the slightly thicker material, making them tougher than our goatskin leather products. These bags generally soften over time as well. Make sure you know which leather your backpack is made of, as you have to care for full-grain leather and smooth leather differently.

Care products that moisturize the leather and create a protective layer are most suitable for backpacks made of smooth leather. The best way to care for semi-aniline leather (smooth leather that has a treated surface) is to use colorless leather creams and lotions, in combination with water-proofing sprays, if the leather’s surface hasn’t been properly sealed beforehand. For aniline leather backpacks (smooth leather that has a natural surface structure and no additional sealing), we recommend using special aniline leather or wax sprays, liquid or cream-based products should be avoided as they could stain the leather.

Backpacks made of full-grain leather should be roughened occasionally using a special brush or plastic sponge to avoid fatty smooth spots forming and remove any dirt from the leather. Do not use liquid or cream-based care products as they can leave stains on the leather. However, you can use waterproofing sprays to protect full-grain and smooth leather.
